Knit a hat for your squid

Do you know a squid who needs a hat for the chilly winter?

Here is a knitting pattern to make a hat for your own special squid. I’ve never made a knitting pattern before so I’m sure  there is probably a much better way to do this. I tried my best. Happy knitting to you!

Squid’s Hat Knitting Pattern

Finished Measurements
9″ wide at base
13″ tall (not including ear flaps and pom pom)

Yarn
2 colors of “Cuddles Solid” Crystal Palace Yarn (Acrylic; 98 yards/50 grams) or heavy worsted yarn. 1 skein of each color.
White yarn for pom pom.

Needles
16″ circular needle size 9.
Double pointed needles size 9.

Notions
Yarn needle, scissors, stitch marker, polyester filling.

Gauge
4.5″/inch in stockinette stitch

Abbreviations:
K: Knit
K2tog: Knit Two Together (right leaning decrease)
M1r: Make One Right (right leaning increase)
M1l: Make One Left (left leaning increase)
P: Purl
P2tog: Purl two together (left leaning decrease)
P2togtbl: Purl two together through the back loop (right leaning decrease)
Ssk: Slip Slip Knit (left leaning decrease)
St(s): Stitch(es)
St St: Stockinette stitch

Hat
Begin with Yarn A, work throughout in stripes of 8 rows in Yarn A and then 8 rows in Yarn B.

(1st stripe)
Yarn A
Cast on 80 st on circular needles. Join for working in the round. Place marker to indicate beginning of the round.
Rows 1-8: *K2, P2; repeat from * to end.

(2nd stripe)
Yarn B
Row 9: Knit. 80 sts.
Row 10: Ssk, k 38 sts, k2tog, k 38 sts. 78 sts.
Row 11: Knit.
Row 12: Knit.
Row 13: Knit.
Row 14: Ssk, k 37 sts, k2tog, k 37 sts. 76 sts.
Row 15: Knit.
Row 16: Knit.

(3rd stripe)

Leaving a long end, cut off yarn and thread through remaining stitches, pull up and secure.

Using white yarn, make a 3″  pom pom and attach to top.

Ear Flaps (make 2)
Yarn B
Row 1: Pick up 14 sts at the center of the side of the hat.
Rows 2-8: St st.

Yarn A
Rows 9-12: St st.
Row 13: Ssk, k 10 sts, k2tog. 12 sts.
Row 14: P2tog, p 8 sts, p2togtbl. 10 sts.
Row 15: Ssk, k 6 sts, k2tog. 8 sts.
Row 16: P2tog, p 4 sts, p2togtbl. 6 sts.
Row 17: Ssk, k 2 sts, k2tog. 6 sts.

Cast off. Cut off yarn and weave in ends.

Tassles
Cut 6 18″ strands of yarn A. Use the yarn needle to pull each strand half way through the bottom center of the ear flap to create 12 strands hanging from the ear flap. Divide the strands into 3 groups of 4 strands and braid the groups together. Tie a knot at the bottom. Repeat for other ear flap.

Stuff hat with polyester filling to make the hat stand up.

Put hat on head!
